I strive to harness the power of composites to create sustainable solutions for those in need. Amidst a growing homelessness crisis, my ultimate goal is to create sustainable sandwich composite structures for use in temporary housing solutions. Only a fraction of sandwich composite boards are environmentally friendly and many are greenwashed. I created fully recyclable panels with similar physical properties made of commercially available, environmentally friendly components. The components included 100% recycled PET core, natural flax fiber reinforcement, and soy-based epoxy resin with the additive Recyclamine – a novel technology that allows for the epoxy adhesive to be broken down. The new addition of Recyclamine allows for the board to be separated into its original parts and recycled. Through ASTM testing, my panels were comparable in multiple aspects to commercialized conventional panels. The goal is to create a modular and sustainable solution to tent cities and overcrowded shelters.
