The Helicoid™ leading edge protection (LEP) is a patented bio-inspired fiber architecture that extends wind blade lifespan by 4-5 times. Using unidirectional fiber-plies with <30° inter-ply angles in a helicoidal layup via non-crimp fabric (NCF) technology, it significantly reduces erosion. Tests on E-glass wind blade profiles showed 75% less eroded mass than conventional substrates at the same weight and thickness. It pairs with polyurethane coatings to enhance blade longevity, reducing maintenance and energy costs. Helicoid LEP can be applied during blade manufacturing or as an aftermarket repair solution, offering flexible maintenance schedules and continuous energy production. The innovation uses conventional manufacturing processing and wind qualified raw materials. Helicoid™ LEP is used in the wind energy market to combat leading-edge erosion (LEE), significantly lowering maintenance costs and enhancing energy production stability. This innovation supports sustainability by reducing the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and enabling a reliable supply of renewable energies.
